His biography also serves as a micro-history of the 19th-century Balkan world, coinciding chronologically with the massive transformations experienced by Southeastern Europe: the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, the rise of national movements in the Balkans, the establishment and modernization of institutions, profound changes in social attitudes, and the triumph of scientific progress.
