Enrique Vila-Matas Honored with the 2026 Spanish National Prize for Literature

Spanish literature celebrates one of its most iconic and sui generis voices. Enrique Vila-Matas has been awarded the 2026 National Prize for Spanish Literature (Premio Nacional de las Letras Españolas), the highest distinction bestowed by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in recognition of an author’s lifetime body of work.

The jury commended his “decisive influence on contemporary narrative, his contribution to the Borgesian tradition in the Spanish language, and his formal originality and fidelity to the metafictional spirit of Cervantes.”

Vila Matas

As the author himself aptly noted from the legendary Barcelona bookstore +Bernat, where he received the news, his work is not merely “metaliterature,” but an uninterrupted, playful meditation on writing and life itself, where the boundaries between reality and fiction dissolve with utmost grace.

For readers in Greece, this singular universe—populated by wandering writers, secret literary conspiracies, and unexpected journeys—is warmly familiar through his books published by Ikaros Publishing.

In Montevideo, Vila-Matas draws us into a delightful geography of mystery and literary wandering, traversing cities and borders guided by doubt and irony. Similarly, in In Kassel, there is no logic (Kassel no invita a la lógica), the author transforms into a living work of art—a performance of writing—within the famous Documenta exhibition, proving that literature remains an arena of absolute freedom and play.

His forthcoming book, El canon de cámara oscura, is currently in preparation for release in 2027, translated into Greek by Nanna Papanikolaou.

This honor bestowed upon Enrique Vila-Matas reminds us of what his readers have long known: that despite the uncertainties of our times, literature is always there to surprise us, entertain us, and reintroduce us to the world through the prism of pure creative imagination.
