A doctor, politician, visionary and philanthropist who supported the Philological Society of Athens more than anyone else. His biography also serves as a micro-history of the Balkan world of the 19th century, as it coincides with the major transformations experienced by South-Eastern Europe: the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, the emergence of national movements in the Balkans, the establishment and modernisation of institutions, the profound changes in social attitudes up to that point, and the triumph of scientific progress. The book, which was first published in a bilingual edition by the Romanian publishing house Editura Omonia, is supplemented by bibliographical references, chronological tables, indexes of names and places, as well as rare photographic and archival material that capture the thematic and chronological evolution of the long and achievement-filled life of this iconic man.
