"...good stories require great creators, even if the facts are well known. They are read differently, rewritten by very powerful pens, and fill us with emotions, suspense, thoughts and a thousand and one images. Images crafted in the book by Christos Kourtoglou through unique collage, painting and art, continuing the journey into imagination, dreams and powerful narratives!"
– Eleni Betinaki, Saturday’s Fairy Tales"...Ships are a major part not only of our lives but also of our culture. Trade routes led to the discovery of new continents, new civilisations, new peoples – they led to the enrichment of human knowledge and culture. Maria Angelidou and Antonis Papatheodoulou describe these ships in the ‘Ships’ series published by Ikaros, and together they describe a vehicle towards the fantastical, the elusive and the unknown."
– Maria Soubert, Theathinai.com"...The two authors, with their talent and unique perspective on the stories of the ships they choose to present to us, manage to breathe new life into them."
– Children’s Books Blog"...Magical, too, are these stories of ships that played with fire, the sun, history, rivers, seas and oceans. Stories with flames, small or large, that terrify, send people fleeing, that scatter in the winds and turn everything to ash, smoke and air. The ships scream as they burn, though their terror is silent..."
– Eleni Betinaki, Patris Newspaper"...Both are wonderful books, written by two much-loved authors who made no concessions to the richness of their narrative language, nor did they simplify their texts for the sake of the children they are aimed at. And this is one of the three characteristics that make these books stand out."
– Zoe Koskinidou, Red Fox"...Maria Angelidou and Antonis Papatheodoulou have accustomed their readership to subversive stories that manage to lead the mind down new paths and ignite creative thinking. The aim of the ‘Ships’ series is to take young book lovers on a journey through the seas of history, mythology and literature, and to show children the beauty hidden within words, myths and time."
– Kelli Kritikou, Athens Voice"...‘Ships’ is a wonderful series of books by Antonis Papatheodoulou and Maria Angelidou, published by Ikaros, dedicated to unique ships."
– Two Boys and Hope"...The two authors recount these adventures with vividness, immediacy and humour, with the invaluable help of Christos Kourtoglou’s illustrations, which seem almost to come to life. Reading them, and trying to put myself in the shoes of young readers, I thought that this is exactly how I would like history books at school to be! If history could really be taught like this, it would become children’s favourite subject and, for sure, they would never forget it!"
– Phoebe Lekka"...Maria Angelidou and Antonis Papatheodoulou have, each in their own way, shared through literature the lives of merchant ships, passenger ships, warships, riverboats, mythical vessels, ancient ships and modern ships… Through their stories, they created a panorama far broader than the ships and their voyages themselves, as in each one we read about the people who commanded them. As in the previous books in the series, the two charismatic storytellers, remaining true to their writing style, weave micro-stories from the grand tapestry of History; in other words, they work on its finer details, making it more compelling for readers."
– Mariza Decastro, The Reader"...With the same narrative skill and characteristics as the previous two, perhaps with even more mature prose, with knowledge, imagination and subtle humour, shedding light on the most hidden aspects of the stories, the two authors turn our gaze to six ‘strange’ ships of history. And whilst we may have heard a thing or two about Cousteau’s Calypso or the Kon-Tiki, the other stories come with the surprise of the unknown (for most of us)."
– Apostolos Pappos, Elniplex.com"...I hold in my hands two exceptional books from Ikaros Publications, whose sole purpose is to transport me and my children to magical, fantastical places, both obvious and hidden! All that remains is for us to let our imagination travel with them, and if you wish, you can come along with us as a fellow traveller on one of the most curious and fantastical journeys you have ever undertaken! What do you say? Shall we set sail? The ships are ready, with their holds polished and their keels primed for adventure!"
– Mama's 'n' Papa's Blog"...A unified series. The book now forms part of a unified series from Ikaros Publications, featuring ships that sail back and forth across the boundaries of history, mythology and world literature. Like this one and three others, they ask young readers to close their eyes and be transported far from the world of literalism, letting go, if only for a moment, of the anchor of linguistic security."
