The “Ships that carried the imagination” in White Ravens

‘The Ships That Carried the Imagination’ have been selected and are featured on the international White Ravens list.  The White Raven label is awarded annually by the International Youth Library in Munich to books that deserve international attention due to the global themes they address or because of their exceptional and pioneering visual and literary approach. The committee’s reasoning: “People have always travelled the world by ship. Many – even some of the mythical ones – were built to fulfil desires and longings, anxieties and ambitions, hopes and delusions. They undertook adventurous voyages on the open sea, leading their passengers to their dark fate, to forgotten ports or to utopian destinations that promised prosperity. In this book of ‘six ship biographies’, the protagonists are the ‘Pequot’ from Moby-Dick, Jules Verne’s ‘Saint-Michel’, the ‘Argo’, the ‘Hispanola’ from Treasure Island, the Flying Dutchman, and the ‘Lucianus’ journey to the moon.Authors Antonis Papatheodoulou and Maria Angelidou have written the stories of these ships in a gripping manner and enriched them with fresh and interesting details. The internationally renowned artist and illustrator Christos Kourtoglou once again demonstrates his talent for translating texts into poetic images using his unrivalled mixed-media technique.
