Axel Scheffler was born in Hamburg, Germany. Although he was good at drawing, he had never imagined a career in illustration until he won a purple stuffed cow in a drawing competition.
In 1982, he moved to England to learn English and study illustration. He has illustrated many books, and in 1993 he began collaborating with the famous children’s author, Julia Dolantson.
Their book *The Gruffalo* became a global success and was adapted into a television cartoon in 2009.
His books have been translated into 42 languages. He lives in London and has a young daughter.
Julia Donaldson
Julia Donaldson was born on 16 September 1948 in London. She is the author of many successful children’s books, such as “Room on the Broom” and the award-winning “The Gruffalo”, which won the Nestlé Smarties, Blue Peter Best Book to Read Aloud, Children’s Audio Book of the Year, and many other awards. She has also written children’s plays and songs, and regularly runs storytelling and drama workshops. She lives in Glasgow with her husband Malcolm and their two sons. In 2011, she was awarded the royal honour of MBE for her services to literature, as well as the title of Children’s Laureate, succeeding the illustrator Anthony Browne in this role.
