DAY I understand the day from the mouth, from the way the water runs in the washbasin, from the way last night’s wine blends with the toothpaste stuck to the back molar. And yet my day wasn’t always so human, my waking sun, since it didn’t even wait for dawn to redden the dark shutters and the glints on the windows. Say that those days were inimitable, ready to burst forth from the tomb of the sheets and the mists that wrapped in their bliss the carpets, the bedrooms, the picture frames. Better say that those days for the first time were pushing back thick clothes, window frames and doors that had no house numbers nor soups prepared for the cold but eight-hour days of studious children with their financial future secured.
