Europe was born of the Schism

-
‘Today comes from yesterday; the future emerges from the past.’ From yesterday emerged two cultural ‘paradigms’ that have shaped human history: The Greek sociocentric and the Western European (post-Roman) individualistic ‘paradigm’. As opposites, the two ‘paradigms’ are mutually exclusive; the realisation of one presupposes the consistent denial and rejection of the other. Today’s globalised ‘Western’ culture is the reversal of the terms of what was once Greek culture, the turning inside out (like a glove turned inside out) of its premises and objectives. Recalling this world-historical ‘Schism’ is likely to provoke personal resistance to the primacy of individualism and utilitarianism – to the ‘radical nihilism’ (radikale Nihilismus) that Nietzsche denounced as Europe’s most horrific nightmare.
