Apexo
A tender yet incisive collection featuring as its literary protagonists the usually silent faces of an indifferent society
In ‘Outside’, Achilles III walks the fine line that separates – and at the same time connects – the ‘inside’ and the ‘outside’, presenting stories featuring people who live on the margins of society and, whether they put themselves on public display by roaming the streets or hide in the city’s dark corners, each sends out their own unique message on a frequency that usually goes unnoticed.
In the book’s twenty-two short stories, the reader enters a different literary universe, full of twists and turns, briefly falls in step with people with whom, as they journey on, they discover they have far more in common than they initially believed, sees their reflection in unexpected surfaces and looks harsh truths straight in the eye. Then, moving into a world where everything obeys the rule that ‘There are no rules’, at some point he is called upon to decide whether, ultimately, what he has watched unfold from page to page is more paradoxical than the things that surround him daily and no longer make a particular impression on him simply because he has grown accustomed to them…

Achilleas III's short stories forge bonds of detachment and unprovoked intrusion of the "Outsiders" into the world of those who are "Insiders" in various ways. The multifaceted and multi-tentacled realism of Achilleas III's short stories will, in reality, abolish the separation of the inside from the outside—not to bring about a comforting consensus nor to perpetuate an organic rivalry, but to show an inevitable interpenetration.
– Vangelis Chatzivassiliou, To VIMA
His perspective, self-described as "pess-optimistic," avoids both cynicism and easy hope. Instead of solutions, it offers a persistent observation: even within decay, there are fragments of meaning and beauty—provided one is willing to seek them out where one usually sees only "trash."
– Stelios Papagrigoriou, CNNTwenty-two stories of people who are on the "outside," 22 short stories that balance between the "inside" and the "outside" of everyday life. This is the basic structure of Achilleas III's new collection, Outside, which inevitably raises several questions and reflections. What does the margin mean versus plain sight? Who has control and who has the floor? The answer is left to the reader, though the line of emotional exploitation is thin and not always impenetrable.
– Konstantinos Sarantis, K MagazineWith high inspiration and ingenuity, and using irony, humor, the paradoxical, the marriage of the realistic with the surreal, tenderness, sarcasm, the expression of social and existential anxieties, the decadence of the human species and the city, and an endless game with words, emotions, the end of every beginning and the beginning of every end, and with a critical gaze upon things and daily life, Achilleas writes in a humorous way while speaking completely seriously, gifting us 22 short stories that are a delight to read, structure, and express, presenting slices of life of marginalized people whom we encounter before us every day.
– Yiannis Drougos, To PontikiThe author lets the street people themselves speak, to tell their story, to leave their imprint upon us—something we all too often ignore. […] All these characters, and everyone else who parades through the book, compose the city's hidden soul, which exists not only thanks to or because of its illuminated streets, its elaborate buildings, or the expensive cars that rev aggressively on the asphalt.
– Dionysis Marinos, Book Press- Achilles III
Achilles III was born in Kavala, Thessaloniki and Athens in 1979, 1998 and 2002, respectively. ‘Apexo’ is his fifth book, following ‘Komplexiko’ (2016) and three collections of short stories – ‘Paracharaktis’ (2019), ‘Desmophylakas’ (2022) and ‘Telos Panton’ (2024). Despite all this, he remains unsure exactly what a ‘brief biographical note’ is supposed to contain.
