Ikaros Publications has released the book by Professor Konstantinos D. Svolopoulos, "The Decision to Extend Greek Sovereignty in Asia Minor." This study clarifies the nature of Greece’s intervention in Asia Minor. It attempts to interpret the decisions of Eleftherios Venizelos and to provide a comprehensive picture of the military, political and diplomatic dimensions of the intervention in Ionia, adopting a multifaceted approach. This book crowns the long and systematic study of Eleftherios Venizelos’s foreign policy by the academic Konstantinos Svolopoulos, a pioneer and recognised scholar of the period and the topics under examination. The publication was made possible with the kind support of the Eleftherios K. Venizelos National Research and Study Foundation.

Konstantinos Svolopoulos

Konstantinos Svolopoulos was born in Athens.
He studied history and archaeology at the University of Athens and political science and international relations in Paris. In 1978 he was appointed lecturer at the Law School of the University of Thessaloniki and in 1981 professor of the history of international relations at the Law School of Thessaloniki, a post he held until 1989, when he resigned to take up the chair of Professor of Modern Greek History at the University of Athens.

Together with Konstantinos Tsatsos and K. Trypanis, he founded the ‘Konstantinos G. Karamanlis’ Foundation, of which he became director in 1990. Between 1962 and 1965, he curated the Eleftherios Venizelos archive at the Benaki Museum. In 2003, he was elected a full member of the Academy of Athens. In 2009, he served as its vice-president and in 2010 as its president.
