E.P. Papanoutsos

Evangelos Papanoutsos was born in 1900 in Piraeus. He studied at the universities of Athens, Berlin, Tübingen and Paris. He held a doctorate in Philosophy from the German University of Tübingen. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate in Law by the University of St Andrews in Scotland.
His contribution to the functioning and renewal of Greek education is widely recognised. He served in education from 1920, and as a teacher rose through all the ranks of the hierarchy until (following the country’s liberation) he was appointed Director-General and later (in 1950 and 1963) Secretary-General at the Ministry of Education. He taught philosophy, psychology and pedagogy for 20 years at the ‘Athinaion’ educational association. He served as vice-president of the ‘Athens Technological Society’ and as a Member of Parliament for the national constituency in the first Democratic Parliament. Under his editorship, 15 volumes of the journal “Paideia” (1946–1961) and 100 volumes of Ancient Greek Writers, edited by I. Zacharopoulos (1954–1958), were published. His literary output includes dozens of books, not only in Greek, but also in German, English and French. He died in 1982.
