Upside Down

‘Penelope Maximou’ Award for a short-form narrative book for children from the Greek Children’s Book Circle (2015).
Melios the beetle turned himself upside down. Read about his adventure and see what he learnt whilst he was ‘upside down’!
Melios the beetle turned himself upside down, rolling his mud ball. And how strange… when you’re upside down, you see more clearly… and you can discover so much. Where is the truth hidden? What is truly worth it? A tender fairy tale with powerful symbolism. For this book, the author was awarded the 2015 ‘Penelope Maximou’ Prize for a short-form narrative book for children by the Greek Children’s Book Circle.

"...Ikaros Publications once again present a beautiful, tender fairy tale that stands out for its powerful symbolism. Children immediately identify with Papaioannou’s hero, Melios, a simple and humble beetle. They could easily be in his place... They discuss the story, ponder, laugh, feel afraid, and reflect on difference, on love, on the lack of empathy..."

– Magda Zindrou, Every Day Parents

"...The two stories of the little beetle teach us that it is the effort that counts, not the result! Melios never stops trying to achieve his goal, and that is why he succeeds in the end..."

– Mama's 'n' Papa's Blog

Thodoris Papaioannou speaks in the first person about his first steps in writing.

– Diastixo.gr

"...Thodoris Papaioannou writes a wonderful fairy tale about the beauties of life, and Iris Samartzi literally immerses it in the earthy colours of our creation. Striking illustrations featuring elements of nature that coexist, play together and magically ‘dress’ the text line by line...”
