Manolis Andronikos

Manolis Andronikos, a Greek archaeologist, was born in Prusa in October 1919. He later settled in Thessaloniki with his family.
He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens. He subsequently became a professor of Classical Archaeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1952. He completed his studies at Oxford under Sir John D. Beazley (1954–1955). He served in the Archaeological Service. In 1957 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Archaeology (University of Thessaloniki), in 1961 Associate Professor of the Second Chair of Archaeology, and in 1964 Full Professor in the same chair.

He was married to Olympia Kakoulidou. He had a particular love for the arts and literature. He read extensively and was a founding member of the ‘The Art’ society.
He carried out numerous excavations in Veroia, Naoussa, Kilkis, Chalkidiki and Thessaloniki, but his main excavation work was concentrated in Vergina, where he excavated the highly significant Geometric period tumulus cemetery and, in collaboration with G. Bakalakis, continued the excavation of the Hellenistic palace begun in 1937 by K. A. Romaeus. The highlight of his career is considered to be 8 November 1977, when, in Vergina, he brought to light one of the most significant archaeological monuments, the royal tomb of Philip II, King of Macedonia. The tomb had never been plundered and contained priceless finds. This was also one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century on a global scale. Manolis Andronikos died on 30 March 1992.
