Orthodoxy and the West in Modern Greece

-
The words ‘Orthodoxy’ and ‘West’ do not refer to opposing ideologies or different religions. They denote a difference in cultures, that is, a difference in the meaning of existence and way of life – a difference embodied in institutions, in art, and in the hierarchy of needs. ‘Westernised Greek’ or ‘Hellenised Westerner’ are linguistic contradictions: it is like saying ‘wooden iron’ or ‘iron wood’. Yet, in the Greek-named state, which the West condescendingly allowed to be formed as the fruit of the Greeks’ revolt against the Turkish yoke, iron became wooden and the Orthodox Church a conventional ‘national religion’. The book sheds light on this unholy alchemy.
