Death is part of life
-ON THE SHORTLIST FOR THE 2024 ‘THE READER’ MAGAZINE AWARDS
A poetic composition that attempts to encompass three kinds of mourning.
I. Ata: an episode with a simple exit
Hear my trembling, grasp it, speak it; smell my sluggish tongue. Behold my rough, ambitious destiny: once I embodied the lover and now I fight the seduction, emphasising that I have become food for your sacred, lustful rage. Once saved by the embrace of your voice, I had silenced the hollow beats. The truth, pierced and melodious, will be slow in coming. So now live out your beginning and curse me with your blessing as soon as the ambivalence is discerned from the mountains may wolves descend and tear me apart, rotten bachelor; may I be struck from ranks and lineages. Leave now a lock of your hair and a white flower for the dead: for me.

With perhaps the finest title of a Greek poetry collection seen in recent years... rhyming as well as free-verse poetry, which also tries its hand at traditional forms such as the sonnet, demonstrating impressive technical skill, linguistic and formal variety, and above all a poetic brilliance that is rarely encountered. It is an existential elegy of death and nothingness, a vortex at the core of mourning, which—with love as its axis—plumb-lines our era with sonar precision. All of this is rendered with humor and scathing irony, as is indeed fitting for death. Visible are the traces and echoes of poets such as Hektor Kaknavatos, Nikos Karouzos, and Ilias Lagios.
