George Chimonas
Giorgos Cheimonas (1938–2000) was born in Kavala. He spent his childhood in Thessaloniki. In 1962, he settled permanently in Athens with his family. He studied medicine at the Universities of Thessaloniki, Athens and Paris. He made his debut in Greek literature in 1960 with his short story ‘Peisistratos’, which was published in Thessaloniki and won the Thessaloniki Municipality Literary Prize. He also published the following works of prose: “The Excursion” (1964), “Novel” (1966), “Doctor Ineotis” (1971), “The Wedding” (1974), “The Brother” (1975), "The Builders" 1979, "My Journeys" 1984, "The Poet’s Enemy" 1990. His essays have also been published: "6 Lessons on the Word" 1984, "Seventh Lesson on the Word: Word, Time and Symbol" 1984, "The Sullen Renaissance: Eighth Lesson on the Word" 1987, "The Dreams of Insomnia" 1994, "Ninth Lesson on the Word" 2001. She also translated Sophocles’ "Electra", Euripides’ "The Bacchae", "Medea" and "Orestes", and Shakespeare’s "Hamlet" and "Macbeth". He wrote the libretto for the opera “Pylades”, which was staged at the Megaron Concert Hall, directed and designed by Dionysis Fotopoulos, with music by Giorgos Kouroupos. He died in Paris, where he had been living for the last years of his life, on 27 February 2000.
