Stavros Lagkadianos’s novel describes, in a direct yet highly poetic manner, the life and personality of an exceptionally interesting woman. It is no coincidence that the beautiful girl of ’37 is identified with the crumpled dress as the title of her life. Fear, intolerance, envy and guilt are hidden in the folds of her dress. Eleftheria, the heroine of the book, insisted on wearing her crimson dress creased. But what is Freedom? An escape from the established and the sickly, or a flight towards the suspicious, the diseased, driven by passion and unconfessed dreams? The Freedom of the times and of aimless quests? Freedom from conscience and guilt? Or perhaps a place that claims such freedom as its own? Or the freedom of a woman walking a tightrope between her inner and outer worlds? What would she wish to avoid? What has she endured?
