Tristan and Isolde

-
Tristan and Isolde are one of the most famous romantic couples in the history of European culture. Wagner’s opera (the libretto is by the composer) is a hymn to absolute love, ending with a miracle: Isolde’s ‘death from love’ ("Liebestod") of Isolde, who collapses upon the dead body of her beloved. Wagner’s poetic text is being published in Greek for the first time by Ikaros Publications. The libretto is presented in the original language, with the translation alongside. The inspired translation, the introduction, the chronology of the opera’s creation and the artistic editing of the publication are by Alexandros Isaris. The appendix contains an excellent study by the renowned German Wagnerian Dieter Borchmeyer on the role played by night in this work.

Richard Wagner

A 19th-century German composer and poet (Leipzig, 1813 – Venice, 1883), regarded internationally as one of the greatest geniuses of musical composition. It was Wagner who transformed opera into ‘musical drama’: an ideal blend of music, poetry, dance and visual delight. A key role in the conception of such a combination was played by the systematic use of the ‘leading musical theme’ or ‘leitmotif’ for each different character, object or central idea of the work.
