Commentary on the Song of Songs

An elegy to Love, Christos Yannaras’s most classic book.
‘We know love only from the distance of failure. Before failure there is no knowledge; knowledge always comes after the fruit has been eaten. In every love, the experience of the taste of paradise and the loss of paradise is relived. We study love only when exiled from the fullness of life that it bestows.” The author says of the book: ‘Of all my work, I am particularly fond of one book, the Commentary on the Song of Songs, whose title is rather conventional; the Song of Songs is, in fact, the inspiration for an essay on Love. I think it expresses me best and perhaps sums up most comprehensively everything I have attempted in writing.”
