The Spoken and the Unspoken

-
The theme of the book is the language of metaphysics. Words such as God, soul and immortality seem to be commonly understood. But what can ‘understanding’ mean in the case of words that refer to non-sensible meanings? The centaur, the mermaid, the sphinx, the satyr can also be correctly understood in terms of their meaning (we all understand what they mean), but the referents to which they refer are non-existent and imaginary. What path or method of knowledge can ensure we distinguish between the real and the imaginary in the case of the language used by metaphysics? The book proposes, specifically, the language of references to the possibility of human existence after death as a field of scrutiny. The meaning of people’s everyday lives is judged by the affirmation or refutation of this possibility: the hierarchy of individual and collective priorities, and the formation and diversity of historical cultural formations. The problem explored by the book is the criteria and the cognitive path for the empirical confirmation or refutation of the possibility of human immortality.
