The Practical Guide to Well-being

-
For more than two thousand years, Stoicism has equipped us with a system of defence against adversity. That is why, after all, it is more relevant than ever. However, we are faced with a difficult question: Is it true that we should not care about our work, our loved ones or our lives? The ancient Stoics would answer in the affirmative. In this essay, the philosopher Massimo Pigliucci presents a renewed form of Stoicism that reflects contemporary science and the social sensibilities of our time. The author acknowledges the bonds of affection that bring us joy, the satisfaction of achieving a goal, and the grief caused by loss. Stoicism is not about achieving indifference, but rather resilience in the face of pain and measured enjoyment; in other words, it is transformed into a philosophical teaching that allows us to live better.
