In The Future We Choose, Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac – head of the UN negotiating team in the talks leading to the historic 2015 Paris Agreement – issue a warning, but at the same time offer an optimistic outlook on climate change and the future of humanity.
The authors present two possible scenarios for our planet. In one, they describe what life on Earth will be like in 2050 if we fail to meet the climate targets of the Paris Agreement. In the other, they explain what it would be like to live in a regenerative world with a carbon-neutral balance. They argue that the climate crisis must be tackled immediately, with determination and optimism. The Future We Choose presents the alternatives available to us and tells us what governments, companies, and each of us can—and must—do to avert disaster.

Christiana Figueres was Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) from 2010 to 2016 and the driving force behind the most significant climate agreement in history, the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
Together with Tom Rivett-Carnac, they are co-founders of Global Optimism, an organisation whose primary aim is to bring about environmental and social change. They work closely with key climate campaigners, including Greta Thunberg, Al Gore, Leonardo DiCaprio, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Jane Goodall and David Attenborough.
Tom Rivett-Carnac
Tom Rivett-Carnac was Christiana’s policy strategist on political issues at the UN. Together with Christiana Figueres, he is a co-founder of Global Optimism, an organisation whose main aim is to bring about environmental and social change.
They work closely with key climate campaigners, including Greta Thunberg, Al Gore, Leonardo DiCaprio, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Jane Goodall and David Attenborough.
