Vasilis Vasilikos

Vasilis Vasilikos, son of Nikolaos, was born in Kavala on 18 November 1934. Education: Karyotakis High School (Kavala), Valagiannis School, Anatolia American College (Thessaloniki), Law School (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), Yale University – Drama School, SRT – School of Radio and Television (New York) for television directing. Assistant director on foreign productions, documentary director, screenwriter, script editor (Dr), script consultant at Arte (1990–1993), amateur actor, journalist, writer, Deputy Director-General at ERT-1 (1981–1984), City Councillor for the Municipality of Athens (1994–1996), Ambassador of Greek Personalities to UNESCO (1996–2004), President of the Writers’ Society (2001–2005). Honours: ‘12’ Award (1961, for the trilogy ‘The Leaf. The Well. The Annunciation”), State Short Story Prize (1980, for “The Last Farewell”), which he did not accept, Meditteraneo International Prize (1970). Honorary Doctorate from the University of Patras in the Department of Literature, Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic (1984), Member of the International Parliament of Writers based in Strasbourg, Member of the Board of Directors of the Maison des Ecrivains (France, 1990–1993). He is the most widely translated Greek author after Kazantzakis, Ritsos and Cavafy. His books have also been published in Braille. He is married to the soprano Vasso Papantoniou and they have a daughter, Evridiki.
