For an anniversary

Ikaros Publications was founded in December 1943 by Nikos Karidis, Alekos Patsifas and Marios Ploritis. From then until now, it has soared to great heights; it has enjoyed successes and faced difficulties. Today, Ikaros celebrates 70 years and remains a family business. The second and third generations continue to publish books with the same passion, the same ethos and the same values as the founders, whilst at the same time exploring new avenues and keeping a close eye on new authors, trends and technological developments. In 1993, we celebrated our first 50 years with a book of the same name, which featured texts by close collaborators, our history up to that point, covers, frontispieces and a complete catalogue of our publications with bibliographical details. This year we are celebrating our seventieth anniversary with a different kind of volume. Proud and grateful to all those who have entrusted us with their works in recent years and have contributed to shaping the identity and quality of our publications, we are giving the floor to our collaborators, the wider Ikaros family. Authors, translators and editors have contributed to this book with a previously unpublished text ‘for an anniversary’—personal or collective, real or imaginary. Some chose to write about our own anniversary or about a memory of their acquaintance with Ikaros. Others submitted a personal account or short stories about an anniversary, whilst others gave us poems or essays on every possible association that the concept of an anniversary might evoke. The volume opens with the poem ‘The Anniversary’ by Odysseas Elytis.
