The enigma of death, like the inexplicable nature of love, is not illuminated by the self-centred demands of reason; it is illuminated only through the path of participation. And participatory knowledge is gained only through the discipline of freedom, that is, of erotic self-renunciation and self-offering. Compulsory immortality would, by definition, be hell. The only eternal non-hell that the human mind can conceive is: to exist, because you freely choose to exist, with love as the fullest joy of existence. This is the ecclesiastical good news.
