This is an annotated anthology of texts ranging from Homer to Elytis. The book features an anthology of works by: Homer, Sappho, Aeschylus, Pindar, Thucydides, Euripides, Aristophanes, Plato, Demosthenes, Callimachus, Luke, John, Romanos the Melodist, John of Damascus, Anna Komnene, Vitsentzos Kornaros, Andreas Kalvos, Dionysios Solomos, General Makrygiannis, Alexandros Papadiamantis, Kostis Palamas, C.P. Cavafy, Nikos Kazantzakis, Giorgos Seferis, Yannis Ritsos, Odysseas Elytis. Each of the twenty-six chapters includes a brief biographical note on the author featured in the anthology, the text and a translation – where deemed necessary – and a commentary on the text. This carefully edited volume offers readers the opportunity to engage with the Greek authors who constitute the canon of Greek literature, that is, texts which, due to their value, are considered ‘required reading’.

Michalis Z. Kopidakis

0 Michalis Z. Kopidakis was born in 1945. He studied classical philology at the Universities of Thessaloniki and Heidelberg. He served at all levels of university education in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Thessaloniki until 1997 and, from 1998, served as a professor in the Department of Methodology, History and Theory of Science at the University of Athens. He is now an Emeritus Professor. His publications include: ‘The Third Book of Maccabees and Aeschylus’ (1982); ‘Ariadne. Comments on the erotic Seferis’ (1984); “George Seferis and Maro. Correspondence” (edited, 1986); Longinus, “On Height” (translation and commentary, 1990); “Symonides, Iambus Against Women” (1994); “In Praise of Wine. An Anthology of Poetry on Wine” (1995); “History of the Greek Language” (design and editing, 1999); “On the Greek Language...” (2003) etc.

His academic interests concern Aeschylus, the Septuagint translation, the New Testament (religious background, language and style), Hellenistic Jewish literature, the history of the Greek language, the Cretan dialect, modern Greek poetry and the history of the Cretan revolutions.
