- Soloúp
AuthorSoloúp is a political cartoonist (To Pontiki, Shedia street magazine, formerly To Vima, Goal News, etc.) and a comic book creator (Babel, Galera, etc.). He studied Political Science at Panteion University and holds a PhD from the University of the Aegean (Department of Cultural Technology and Communication), whilst his postdoctoral research at the same university focuses on the retelling of history through comics.
His book, Greek Comics (Topos, 2012), a seminal work in this field of research, examines the development of the Ninth Art in Greece from the post-dictatorship era up to around 2010. His most recent study, Comics & Graphic Novels: A Guide to Aivali (Dioptra, 2025), created in collaboration with Evangelia Moula, focuses on the use of comics in education. He teaches cartooning and comics on the e-learning programme of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, whilst organising series of comics workshops in collaboration with cultural institutions such as the Benaki Museum and the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation.
To date, he has published 14 collections of cartoons and comics, as well as the graphic novels Aivali (Kedros, 2014 / Dioptra, 2025) –translated into English, French, Turkish and Spanish–, Collector: Six Short Stories about a Bad Wolf (Ikaros, 2018), 21: The Battle of the Square (Ikaros, 2021) – which was linked to a broader
research programme by EL.I.D.E.K. in collaboration with the University of the Aegean and the National Historical Museum – and ZORBAS: A Most Beautiful Green Stone (Dioptra, 2023), based on Nikos Kazantzakis’s novel *The Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas*.
Inspired by the graphic novels Aivali and Collector, two major exhibitions have been held at the Benaki Museum on Piraeus Street (in 2015 and 2019, respectively), whilst the graphic novel 21: The Battle of the Square formed the basis for the longest-running comic exhibition in Greece (2021–2022) – a dual exhibition, in fact – at the National Historical Museum (Old Parliament Building) and, simultaneously, at the Teriade Museum in Lesbos.
His work has been exhibited in Europe, the USA and Canada.
