The new publishing year brings books for everyone, young and old alike. Here you can read a few words about the titles we plan to publish during the first half of 2016. GREEK FICTION Apostolos Doxiadis: The Three Little PigsTranslation: Stella Kasdagli(The book was written in English and has already been translated into Italian and Spanish. It is based on the author’s earlier book ‘The Three Little Men’) In a medieval monastery in 1974, an elderly man begins to tell a story to a young man carrying out repairs. The story is about the cobbler Ben Frank, who found himself caught up in a brawl that resulted in the murder of the son of the mob boss Tony Lupo. The Mafia boss curses Ben Frank: each of his three sons will die when they reach the age of forty-two. Just as the three little pigs in the classic fairy tale chose to build their houses from different materials in order to avoid the wolf, so too do the three sons ‘build their lives’ in an attempt to escape their fate. The novel has a gripping plot and humour, and through its exploration of the characters, of fate and the responsibility that comes with choices, it explores the boundaries between reason and madness and poses the eternally recurring question that stems from ancient Greek tragedy: whether man can escape his fate. Dimitris Nollas: Short StoriesThe book comprises all the author’s short stories from 1974 to 2012. Specifically, it contains the collections: Polyxeni (1974), Tender Skin (1982), I Dream of My Friends (1990), The Blurred Windows (1996), The Old Enemy (2004), In the Place (2012), and three further short stories published in anthologies. Alejandro Zambra: Ways of Going HomeTranslation: Achilleas KyriakidisThe book begins with an earthquake, seen through the eyes of an unnamed nine-year-old boy living in a middle-class housing estate in Maipu, a town on the outskirts of Santiago, Chile. In the second part, the protagonist is the author of the first part of the novel. His father is a man of few words who, whilst claiming not to be interested in politics, silently aligns himself—to what extent, the author is not sure—with the Pinochet regime. The narrative alternates between the author and the protagonist, the past and the present, portraying with melancholy and anger the history of a nation and a generation – who, as the author says, learnt to read and write whilst their parents became collaborators or victims of the dictatorship. This is the most personal novel by Alejandro Zambra (author of ‘Bonsai’), who is perhaps the most important Chilean writer since Roberto Bolaño.
