Yeongdo, Korea, 1911. In a small fishing village on the coast of the East Sea, a fisherman marries a fifteen-year-old girl. The poor couple have a daughter, their precious Sanja.
Sanja’s unexpected pregnancy at just sixteen, by a married man, brings humiliation upon the family. However, Isaac, a young priest, offers her the chance to follow him to Japan and live together as husband and wife.
Sanja follows a man she has only just met to a country that is hostile to her, where she has no friends, no home, and cannot communicate with people as she does not know the language.
Thus begins the unique story of an immigrant family, spanning four generations and eight decades. Through desperate struggles and hard-won triumphs, its members remain deeply connected as they grapple with issues of faith, identity and constant survival.

Min Jin Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1968. Her family emigrated to the United States in 1976 and settled in Queens, New York, when she was just eight years old.
From a young age, Lee spent a great deal of time at the local library, where she learnt to read and write. She is a graduate of the History Department at Yale University. She also studied law at Georgetown University. Before devoting herself to writing, she worked as a lawyer in New York.
From 2007 to 2011, she lived in Tokyo, Japan, a period she devoted to researching and writing *Pachinko*. The book received rave reviews from leading literary magazines and was included, amongst others, in the New York Times and USA Today’s lists of the 10 best books of 2017. Furthermore, it was shortlisted for the 2017 National Book Award for fiction. It is expected to be translated into 23 languages.
Min Jin Lee’s writing has appeared in the international press (Condé Nast Traveler, The Times, Vogue, Travel+Leisure, New York Times Magazine).
Min Jin Lee lives in New York with her family.
