It is said that on the peaks of the White Carpathians, certain women had managed to preserve and pass down from generation to generation the knowledge and intuition that had been lost for centuries. They are called goddesses because they are able to heal or predict the future, even though they have not looked after their own. Dora is the last goddess. She cannot accept the backward way of life of these women, nor does she wish to read the future of those who visit her using the melted wax ritual, as her aunt Terezija Surmenova did. Everything changes, however, when she realises that the difficulties she had faced up to that point – her confinement in a boarding school, as well as her aunt’s institutionalisation – were part of a carefully crafted plan. It is the late 1990s, and at the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic there is a file waiting to be discovered; it contains police documents concerning an enemy of the state, Surmenova, Dora’s aunt. Thus the sceptical Dora uncovers details of the hitherto unknown fate of her family, as well as that of the other goddesses. Did the goddesses ultimately pose a danger to their unsuspecting patients? Did they truly pose an ideological threat to post-war society? Katerina Tuchkova’s gripping novel is brimming with magic and emotion, whilst simultaneously shedding light on a carefully concealed chapter of Czech history.

Kateřina Tučková was born in Brno, Czech Republic, in 1980. She is a writer and translator. She studied Czech Literature and Art History at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Masaryk University in Brno.
In 2006, she made her literary debut with the novel Montespaniáda. This was followed by Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch (2009), which earned her nominations for the 2010 Magnesia Literature Award, the Josef Škvorecký Award for Czech authors, and the Jiří Orten Award for authors under the age of thirty-five.
Her most recent novel, The Goddesses of Žitková (2012), is the result of rigorous archival research as well as personal interviews conducted by the author. She has been honoured with the following awards: the Josef Škvorecký Award 2012, the Czech Bestseller Prize 2012, the Magnesia Litera – Readers Award 2013, the Czech Book Prize – Readers Award 2013 and the Premio Salerno Libro d’Europa 2018.
Katerina Tuchová’s books have been translated into 14 languages, and over 200,000 copies have been sold in the Czech Republic.
