Tzanis Tzanetakis

Tzannis Tzannetakis was born on September 13, 1927, in Gytheio. He was an officer in the Hellenic Navy. He served as the commander of the gunboat "Laskos" from 1959 to 1960 and subsequently as a submarine commander (1963–1967). He resigned one day after the imposition of the dictatorship on April 21, 1967. He was arrested in July 1969 by the dictatorial regime and was imprisoned from 1969 to 1971. During the Metapolitefsi (the transition to democracy), he became actively involved in politics. He served as Minister of Public Works, Foreign Affairs, National Defense, and Tourism in New Democracy governments. He also served as Prime Minister of the government formed by New Democracy and the Coalition of the Left and Progress from July 1989 to October of the same year. He published the books: Choros Esti tis Agoras (Ikaros, 1994) and India: Enas Allos Tropos Zois (Estia Bookstore, 1994). He translated Patrick Leigh Fermor's work Mani into Greek (Kedros, 1973). He passed away in 2010.
