Alekos Lidorikis
AuthorAlekos Lidorikis (1907–1988) was born in Athens, the son of the journalist, playwright, theatre manager and politician Miltiadis Lidorikis. He studied at the Sorbonne and, at the same time, began working as a journalist, critic and columnist for Athenian newspapers (such as Kathimerini, Akropolis, Elefthera Gnomi, Ethnos, and Ta Nea) as well as with the National Herald in New York. As a journalist, he enjoyed great success, particularly in the field of interviews, managing to converse with many leading figures in politics, the arts and intellectual life. He lived in the USA for many years and from 1945 to 1959 worked for the film company Twentieth Century Fox. He made his literary debut in 1925 with one-act plays, which were staged by amateur theatre companies, and in 1933 the Aliki-Mousouri theatre company staged his three-act play ‘The Great Moment’. His plays were performed by the Kotopouli, Aroni-Mousouri and National Theatre companies, among others, whilst his entire body of work comprises some twenty titles. He also wrote short stories, novels and a collection of poetry. As General Secretary of the Society of Greek Playwrights, he was awarded the State Theatre Prize in 1940. He died in 1988.
