Ioannis Chrysostomos

Ioannis Chrysostomos was born in Antioch in 347 AD. Orphaned of his father at a young age, he was raised under his mother's care. He studied in Antioch and in Athens alongside Basil the Great. Upon completing his studies, he returned to Antioch and subsequently withdrew to the desert for five years. Upon his return to Antioch, he was ordained a deacon in 381 AD and later became Archbishop of Constantinople in 398 AD. From then on, he authored many works, of which approximately 804 of his homilies have survived to this day. Thanks to his eloquence and gift of speech, he was named "Chrysostom" (meaning "Golden-mouthed"). He is one of the Three Hierarchs (alongside Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian). His best-known work is the Divine Liturgy (Liturgy of Chrysostom), which is primarily celebrated every Sunday in churches. He passed away on September 14, 407 AD.
